Education & Training

Access to needed education and training for low-income parents working toward self-sufficiency is essential. These parents should not be sent out the door to accept the first job that comes along. Rather, parents should be encouraged and assisted in developing the skills necessary to obtain a job that will allow them to support their family for the long term. The WDPP has a long history of protecting the right of Employment First participants to engage in post-secondary education as their work activity. In addition, the WDPP has worked to shape the context in which self-sufficiency planning takes place through the use of the Self-Sufficiency Standard for Nebraska. Currently, the WDPP is engaged in the Choosing Education Campaign, which seeks to raise awareness among Employment First participants, educational institutions, and community organizations about the right to participate in post-secondary education to meet the work requirements. If you are interested hosting or attending a “Choosing Education” training, please fill out the Outreach Request form below.

The surest path to sustainable economic self-sufficiency is higher education. Higher education leads to more stable employment and higher earnings. The more education a person has, the higher her earning potential. Listen to our Public Service Announcement produced and aired by Clear Channel Lincoln.
