Living Wages

The mission of the Living Wage Opportunity Project is to promote policy research and community outreach designed to help welfare recipients and low-wage workers find and keep living wage jobs and build economic self-sufficiency.

The Living Wage Opportunity Project works in coalition with grassroots organizations, educators, academics, government agencies and community groups, and sponsors policy and legal initiatives regarding living wage employment in Nebraska, the job gap between low-skilled workers and available jobs, and welfare-related issues such as job training programs, adequate child care, and economic initiatives for the working poor.

Living Wage Study

On March 1, 2004 the City of Lincoln enacted the Living Wage Ordinance. The law is intended to ensure that taxpayer dollars are only awarded to businesses that provide quality jobs. A 2006 study conducted by Nebraska Appleseed regarding the impact of the living wage ordinance has found that the ordinance has resulted in no unwanted costs to taxpayers.
